Gookin Returns to City Council at Least til November

On a 3-0 vote (Mayor Gaddis doesn't vote), Susan Gookin was returned to city council. Gookin has been on the council before and was beat by Timi Keene two years ago. Graciously, Keene voted her in to fill Susan Benedicts term until November. Benedict still had 2 years left. Leana Johnson interviewed valiantly for the position. Hopefully she will file for the general election. Perhaps all of Gookin's volanteer work on the budget committee was in her favor.

So 3 out of 5 positions PLUS the Mayor are up for vote this November!

Note that ALL terms in White Salmon are 4 years. Seems like a long time for this small town.

Bob Landgren (who owns the nursery on the waterfront) has filed for John Mayo's position.
Dave Poucher (retired forester) has filed to run against Mayor Francis Gaddis (business owner Hood River).
Susan Benedict's (now Gookin's) position will be open. Filing closes July 23.
Ricki Marx's (local roofing business owner) position is open and Susan Gookin (Stevenson computer business owner) has filed for it.

Hard to keep up with it all. If anyone has any updated info, please let us know!

ejI find it a little strange, looks like regardless who is voted out of office in white salmon they needn't worry. just wait a couple of years and you will get your position back one way or another.

For all the folks who rouse rabble, there are just a few people that are committed enough to take part and do the hard work.

Blue Bell,

Why do you find it starange Blue Bell? We live in a small town where only a small percentage of people are willing to volunteer for these positions and take the heat at the same time. It's not like they get paid a lot of money.......it's just that they are willing to step up to the plate and try to make a difference as opposed to many in this community that sit in the bleachers and bitch!

YVSorry you feel as you do Beatledawg,I don't understand why the council keeps going back to the same ol' when new people try their darndest to get onto the council yet the aren't accepted. As we all know Susan Gookin was rejected by the voters, Leane would have came to the council with fresh ideas and possibly would have been an asset to them, but they didn't step away from the mold. If we can I think we should begin paying all the city officials at least a stipend for their service to our community. Maybe then we would have more people offer their services. I also feel that we should incorporate the outlying area into the city, expand the city limits, that way the city would have more revenue.

Well at least Leane can always run for the position this fall. Maybe it was better to get someone in there for the short term that had experience. I would gladly vote for Leane if she filed for the open position.

If Leanne is so dedicated to city life, why does she run for every open position but does not attend regular city, community or committee meetings?

I appreciate her intentions but she really needs to get in gear and up to speed on the issues if she wants to serve and there is no other way that I know than being at meetings.

Jus' one womans opinion.

Heard that she never came to other meetings except when being interviewed - doesn't say much about how serious she is.
