Big Development on Tum Tum Mountain

Recieved in our our blog's new email file WhiteSalmon2007@yahoo.com:
" ...We need to look at the new housing development on Lyons Rd. in Husum. The project belongs to KC commissioner D. Struck. At this time, he continues his carnage of extremely sensitive habitat, unfettered, and, without jurisdiction. This area is home to the largest population of Western Gray Squirrel ( endangered species) in WA. It also lies beneath Tum Tum Mtn, sacred Yakama Native burial ground. It is this project, and others on the horizon, that are feeding the frenzy to change the zoning in the Husum /BZ corner region. Understand the hierarchy here...the Husum /BZ corner community council are basically 'yes men' for the county commissioner ( CC). The CC controls the lackeys on the planning commission, the planning department, and anyone else ."

On this blog we don't post folks email addresses we just act as a conduit. Anyway, we don't know much about this development yet. In the comments section of the June 12 posting, 'Should the Gorge Scenic Act be modified? ', EarlyRiser said there were 900 homes going in. SqeakyWheel thinks that might be an excessive number. Does anyone know?

May I suggest you contact Don Struck and ask him about it?

Perhaps you should get your facts straight. You continue to write and post outright lies.

If someone is posting incorrect facts, the way to dispel the facts are with facts backed up with references of your own. Posters don't have to identify themselves if they don't want to. That is the purpose of a blog. Now, to the poster who says Tum-Tum Mtn has the biggest population of Western Grey Squirrels - where did you get your information and could you please site those references? Also, where did you get the information about the Yakama burial grounds? To my knowledge there is only one small cemetery off Indian Creek - it is on private land and respectfully fenced off (across Rattlesnake Creek from Rattlesnake Rd.) Again, let's have some references on where you got your information.

I know a lot of people are saying that the Rattlesnake Rd improvements were not for the benefit of anyone except the new development on Lyons Rd. Some even dispelled the idea that it might have been for the benefit of the school bus, saying that the school bus doesn't go up Rattlesnake. So, the question of how Rattlesnake Rd got all those improvements will go in the closet and re-surface at the next Commissioner election.

Where is this development located? I'm not familiar the location. I'd sure like the hear more about this.

Come on Heidi, you are saying that lies are being posted. I am asking you to counter with information that you must know of since you jumped in with your comments. I am just an interested citizen, not out to get anyone, not against all developments. I have been told there is a huge amount of re-zoning going on that comes to over 900 building lots by sub-dividing acreages in the Husum BZ area. Maybe you were trying to say your family is not developing all of this?? Help me and others out who have been told this info. It is very hard to get information about what is going on and without info, rumors do get started and this only serves to be devisive and keeps all of us from finding solutions to some of the real concerns for our common community.
Much appreciated. Early Riser

Our property is not slated for any re-zone. It’s not part of the “900 new homes” everyone keeps hearing about. We are developing it in accordance with state and county regulations, as well as local zoning ordinances that have been in place on our property since Klickitat County zoning was adopted over 30 years ago - UNCHANGED. I think it is cowardly and irresponsible for people to anonymously attack my husband when they obviously don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. If people want information – ask us. We have nothing to hide -- our home phone number is listed in the book. I don’t have a problem with people wanting information. What I do have a problem with is the fact that totally inaccurate information is being posted and there is nothing to support these libelous allegations. We have satisfied the Department of Natural Resources, State Fish and Wildlife experts, and the Yakama Nation to name a few. Every governmental agency that has a hand in our development process has signed off on our project – that should speak for itself.

As for Rattlesnake Road, that in no way, shape, or form was improved due to our project. In fact, we have two other superior points of access to our property which doesn’t even TOUCH Rattlesnake Road. Whoever is saying and posting the vicious, defamatory remarks should be ashamed of themselves.

As far as the Indian Burial grounds – do you really think the Yakama Nation would approve of a development happing on their sacred land? Think about that one a bit . . .

In 2005 the Klickitat County Commissioners approved a plan to build a house on sacred Yakama land with reserved treaty rights. An archaeological site is documented on the property. The County Commissioners disregarded all of the county cultural resource ordinances. The Department of Ecology required the landowner to comply with one of those ordinances. Regardless, RCW 27.53 was violated by the landowner knowingly digging into the site in August 2006 and the landowner has built a house on a previously undisturbed pre-European contact component of the site. The County Sheriff and County Prosecutor did nothing when the active disturbance was reported to them. The Governor and Governor's Office of Indian Affairs did nothing even though they were contacted prior to any disturbance. The Attorney General's Office did nothing. Do not believe that just because land is scared to the Yakama Nation and that state laws prohibit an action that the laws will not be violated without any repercussions.

Heidi,

Please, can you inform us as to what traffic modifications your and your husband's development on Lyons will require to the intersection at Oak Ridge Road and Hwy 141? This is already a dangerous intersection given the lack of clear lines of sight, congestion, and pedestrians, any further population pressure would surely exacerbate this.

Simply squaring the intersection of Oak Ridge with Hwy 141 may alleviate the tendency of drivers to take this turn at excessive speed. Residents that live in the town of Husum and lower Oak Ridge are concerned about this and would appreciate an explanation of your plans to handle the increased traffic we will be bound to confront.

Thank you,
Jim

What about the 30 vehicles parked Saturday along Hwy 141 and Oak Ridge -- most (if not all)-- of them parked in the state right of way? Isn't this a traffic hazard?
