Planning Commission

Jim Kacena, developer on the White Salmon Planning Commission, was forced to resign from the planning commision last week because it was revealed that he is not a citizen of White Salmon. Kacena is the brains and money behind the Salmon Run (off) development on that steep hillside on Jewette Ave.

If you are a citizen of our town now is the time to think about stepping up to the job. It is now more important than ever too help shape the living future of our town - the way it will grow for all its citizens - not just out of town developers.

In order to maintain the credibility of this blog you should verify information prior to publishing. Section 2.20.010 of the White Salmon Municipal Code states: "At least three members of the planning commission shall be residents of the city." There is no legal requirement that all 5 commissioners reside within the city limits. Mr. Kacena resigned for personal reasons unrelated to the city.

At the last Planning Commison meeting regarding the Melby sub division or short platte, Commision member Poucher brought up a concern with West Nile Disease. His concern was if the storm water is allowed to be stored there must be a vector control plan also in place. Chairman Don Smith shut him down and said he was way off track. Well it looks like Poucher was correct and was thinking about the future, because the Oregonian on May 17, 2007 FRONT Page below the fold had an article on West Nile Disease and says Oregon is bracing for an onslaught this summer. Electronic link: http://www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/stories/index.ssf?/base/news/1179377703197370.xml&coll=7&thispage=1

My point, the storm water coming from the Melby construction site must be retained in a way that it can not breed mosquitos. If they can not or will not offer a plan before construction then this needs to be shut down before we not only lose our town as we know it but become very ill.

Folks, as far as Poucher's comment about West Nile, it is obviously something we should be concerned about. Still, I don't see how that helps fight developers. The stored stormwater might need to be treated, but I how is that a reason for denying a project? Seems kind of like telling grandpa he can't drive because he doesn't have 20/20 vision. Maybe you should just tell grandpa to put his glasses on. Smarter ideas, please.
